Sylvia McGourlick – Featured Artist throughout August 2019

et local island potter Sylvia McGourlick

Sylvia began her pottery odyssey in Haida Gwaii in the mid-1980s and has been developing her skills and style ever since. While she primarily focuses on functional pottery for everyday use, she enjoys taking breaks to explore other clay forms and styles.

For her August show,  she has both groups on display: functional ware prepared with her classic blue ash and red glazes, as well as a selection of pieces drawing inspiration from her travels to Italy, Japan and Morocco.

In the Mediterranean, you can’t visit archaeological sites or museums without seeing amphorae used by early societies to transport and store products. In Japan Buddhist temples with their Bonsho bells and Shinto shrines with their Torii gates dominate, and if you are a tourist, there is no escaping reproductions of the “the Great Wave off Kanagawa”.

In Morocco the cooking tagine is everywhere, most often seen as an unglazed red clay cooking pot, but also in an elevated form with the classic blue and white glazes of Fez or multi-coloured Berber patterns.

Come and check out Sylvia’s new work at the Potters Place Gallery located at the corner of 5th and Cliffe to 5 P.M. Monday through Saturday. For more information on the Gallery see us on Facebook; go to www.thepottersplace.ca; or call (250) 334-4613.
